Borgo Pignano
A weekend spent at the luxury eco-resort Borgo Pignano, in Volterra, Italy.
We left Florence at 8am, hiring a car to drive us to Borgo Pignano, a picturesque resort just outside the charming medieval town of Volterra, Italy. Our room wasn’t quite ready, so we enjoyed spritzes (aperol and limoncello) and lunch while overlooking the view of the Tuscan countryside from Restaurant Al Fresco.
Borgo Pignano is primarily self-sustaining, with multiple farms and vineyards on their 750 acre estate. From the lavender scented soaps and lotions found in our room to the flour used to make the bread on our table, Borgo Pignano strives to be sustainable. The food was nothing short of incredible.
We spent our first afternoon exploring the grounds of the main estate, which were acquired by the Incontri family in the late 17th century.
Borgo Pignano’s infinity pool was my favorite part - carved from an ancient limestone quarry and overlooking the tranquil hills of Tuscany.
The estate itself features a library, a game hall, and a private collection of vintage Italian cars and motorcycles. There was no shortage of character and charm.
We enjoyed cocktails in the courtyard featuring freshly made syrup. The atmosphere was dreamlike.
Prior to heading to dinner, we enjoyed a complimentary bottle of Borgo Pignano’s red wine that was left in our room along with a handwritten welcome note. The wine was grown and bottled on the grounds.
The next morning was our nine year anniversary. We spent the afternoon horseback riding through the countryside with a private guide, on horses George and Nina. She led us to a clearing which was set up with a picnic featuring fresh caprese salad, bread, cheese, and oil. I will remember this day forever - it was like something out of a fairytale.
Upon our return we prepared for dinner at Villa Pignano, featuring a creative and innovative Tuscan cuisine along with gorgeous sunset views. The service was impeccable.
If you’re considering visiting Tuscany, or Italy for that matter, add Borgo Pignano to the top of your list. It is truly something special.
